While the key to an epic bachelor party is adding an element of surprise, that doesn’t mean a member of your group has to wake up with a tattooed face. From the Baja outback in Mexico to a whiskey lover’s paradise in Portland, here are 10 kick-ass places to hang with your bros before walking down the aisle.
1. Portland, Oregon
Why go: Distillery Row. The 1.5-mile stretch is home to six craft distilleries filled with vodkas and gins, rums and whiskeys, and even specialties such as absinthe and aquavit. Spring for the Distillery Row Passport for tastings and behind-the-scenes tours. If you’re still thirsty, the Multnomah Whiskey Library carries about 1,000 bottles of whiskey. Just don’t drink on an empty stomach: At the Trifecta Tavern, order up the grilled bone marrow and the Big-Ass Steak, a 16-ounce, 28-day dry-aged ribeye.
Stay: The sleek two-room Dream Suite at Jupiter Hotel has a bar and a living room with plenty of couch space for your crew to pre-party. Bonus: It’s less than a mile away from Distillery Row.
2. Los Cabos, Mexico
Why go: The southern tip of the Baja peninsula is all about play—no wonder Justin Timberlake chose Los Cabos for his bachelor party. Spend a day at one of the 14 world-renowned golf courses in the area, and when you’re ready to swap clubs for swim trunks, charter a fishing boat to sail the Sea of Cortez. You’ll see more striped marlin than anywhere else in the world.
Stay: Esperanza’s “Peak Performance” package is made for a guys’ weekend: professional desert racing in the Baja outback, private tequila tasting and cigar sampling, and a complementary TRX class.
3. South Lake Tahoe, California
Why go: America’s largest alpine lake is a Mecca for any outdoor enthusiast. Skydiving, parasailing, kayaking, horseback riding, ATVs . . . the list goes on. Hop the state line to Nevada and you’ll hear the ringing of the slot machines. Channel Frank Sinatra with your own Rat Pack as you revel at Harrah’s and Harveys casinos.
Stay: Make The Landing your home base. This new lakeside resort caters to all your bachelor party needs: a Mountain Recovery massage, potential Heidi Klum sightings (she’s a regular), chauffeured trips to the casinos, and a lit-up toilet bowl to help you aim in the middle of the night—a.k.a. the manliest amenity ever.
4. Vancouver, British Columbia
Why go: Grouse Mountain hosts the wildly-entertaining Lumberjack Show, complete with log rolling, a 60-foot tree climb, and axe throwing—just don’t get any ideas for your own shenanigans. Indulge your inner geek at Xcape, a Da Vinci Code-like-puzzle game experience, or take the more traditional route and party it up at FiveSixty, a 28,000-square-foot nightclub with three floors for dancing.
Stay: Ask about the Lumberjack Package at the downtown Loden Hotel, which offers cabin-themed rooms with onesies, flannel shirts, and trapper hats to get you in the spirit for the Grouse Mountain show. Its proximity to the waterfront and the iconic seawall in the Coal Harbour neighborhood is just another perk.
5. Moab, Utah
Why go: It’s a must-visit for adrenaline junkies. The epic scenery of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks is the perfect backdrop for rock climbing, mountain biking, and tandem base-jumping if you have skydiving experience.
Stay: At Moab Under Canvas, an outdoor resort that opened last month, you can experience the desert without having to worry about a rattlesnake in your sleeping bag. The tents and teepees are on the outskirts of these red rock country parks.
6. San Diego, California
Why go: Looking for something urban without the chaos of a big city? This is it. With 70 miles of coastline, surfing is king here. Mission Bay’s calm waters are especially great for learning to stand-up paddleboard. Once the sun sets, head to the Gaslamp Quarter, a 16-block party strip filled with rooftop bars, nightclubs, and even burlesque venues, like the Pussycat Dollhouse at The Keating Hotel.
Stay: Cure your hangover at the Mediterranean-inspired Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa. While there’s no shame in lounging by the pool sipping OJ, know that the resort just launched an “All Agave” tasting program that explores the Mexican spirits. Super perk: You’re privy to borrow one of the hotel’s three Porsches. Take the convertible to explore the hilltop vineyards nearby.
7. Austin, Texas
Why go: Austin has more than 250 live music venues, and there’s a festival every month, including the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) in March. Come October, Austin City Limits showcases more than 130 indie, rock, and folk acts on eight stages. In the meantime, head to Speakeasy, a three-level lounge with a 1920s vibe and vintage bowling lanes.
Stay: The poolside bungalows at Hotel Saint Cecilia are equivalent to crashing at your coolest friend’s bachelor pad. This boutique property is just a 5-minute drive from downtown and the Anthony Bourdain-approved Franklin Barbecue, known for its “supernatural” brisket. Get there early—it sells out every day.
8. Brooklyn, New York
Why go: It’s essentially a compilation of super-cool neighborhoods. Start your tour in Smorgasburg, Williamsburg’s street-food market haven—and home of the legendary Ramen Burger. Make a pit stop in Dumbo for Grimaldi’s brick-oven pizza and Brooklyn Bridge photos. End the night at Prospect Heights’ Barclays Center to catch a concert.
Stay: DJs spin at Hotel BPM every Friday and Saturday until 3 a.m. This modern enclave, founded by DJ Bijal, has soundproof rooms so you can blast the pregame playlist and no one will complain. Bonus: Ask about the complimentary DJing session to learn how to scratch on real turntables.
9. Tucson, Arizona
Why go: Let the Sonoran desert be your playground for the weekend. Horseback riding, spelunking, and stargazing through the 32-inch telescope at Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter will give your guys’ weekend a whole new perspective.
Stay: A dude ranch may not pop up on your party-planning radar, but when else are you going to pen an eight-cattle herd? The all-inclusive Tanque Verde Ranch, nestled between the Rincon Mountains and the Saguaro National Park, is your Wild West domain. But don’t worry: You can take a break from the cowboy duties. The ranch covers 600 acres of Southwestern terrain riddled with single-track mountain bike trails.
10. Put-in-Bay, Ohio
Why go: Known as the “Key West of the Midwest,” Put-in-Bay is a small island in Lake Erie filled with marinas, restaurants, and pool bars—including Splash, the largest swim-up pool bar in the world. It’s perfect for a crew looking to relive Spring Break memories and party without spending a fortune.
Stay: Rent a lakefront cabin on HomeAway.com—you’ll be glad to have some quiet in the morning after a night of debauchery.
